It was my first time out there and it was amazing.

There are so many kinds of clouds in the sky at once.

When stopped on the road you could hear the birds and wind.

what a lovely place and I saw a moose. What more can you want. well a big horned sheep, but I’ll settle for a moose and a lovely weekend.

Tagged cactus. At least it was with marker and not a knife like most of ‘em.

A Mask for the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum Auction

Mirror frames with carved birds for my friends Sara and Justin and their twins Caroline and Penelope who I can’t wait to meet! The birds were a new way of carving. I wanted them to feel simple and drawn. These are on their way to Austin and will post an image of them with mirror glass!

And Wilson, who I started last month in Arkansas while visiting the ULAR. I am really enjoying all the parts and pieces and connections. He will be partly carved, partly blocky, with architectural components The signs of joinery are something I like, the big mortise through his neck and all the dowels. They will be exposed on the finished piece.

He is a big piece, 11′ long, but small for a whale.

In the middle of this image is a small stool. The stool and other architectural elements add layers of scale. The whale gets enormous, larger than life, when you put yourself on the stool.  Elements or architecture are more suggested and drawn, he transforms from from carved to assembled from nose to tail. He is both coming and going, becoming and disappearing.

he breaks into 6 pieces. When taken apart he looks like a whale ship wreck. Which I really like.

and some drawings done in January in Bolivia. My nephew Arua helped me with color selection. He also helped me name my new body of work by asking me what I was drawing.

Arua makes fantastic drawings, mostly of cars, trucks, and animals. One of my favorite things that he did was to have both the sun and the moon in his drawings. I copied him, because I thought it was brilliant. He also started drawing birds with four legs. I have yet to do that.

The horns are complete! The piece is now ready to get its architectural elements. This will wait another few weeks. I am teaching a workshop at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village, CO for two weeks. Then traveling on to San Diego, where I will be for a semester long residency at San Diego State University!

Hello! This is my first blog posting. The plan is to show process and how the work comes together. To start, here is an image of what I am working on in the studio now. A big horn ram. Here I have glued on the second layer of horns! I really liked the tape clamping. The way it looks, something about it. It makes it mysterious. More to come!
